What is Constipation?

 

Constipation is a common condition where you have infrequent or difficult bowel movements. It often involves having fewer than three bowel movements per week or straining during bowel movements.

 

What Causes Constipation?

Constipation can occur due to various reasons, including:

  • Dietary Factors:
    • Low fiber intake.
    • Inadequate water consumption.
  • Lifestyle:
    • Sedentary behavior or lack of exercise.
  • Medications:
    • Painkillers, antidepressants, or antacids containing calcium or aluminum.
  • Medical Conditions:
    • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
    • Diabetes, hypothyroidism, or neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease.
  • Ignoring the Urge:
    • Delaying going to the toilet can worsen constipation.

Symptoms of Constipation

  • Fewer than three bowel movements per week.
  • Hard, dry, or lumpy stools.
  • Difficulty or pain when passing stools.
  • Feeling like your bowels are not completely empty after a bowel movement.
  • A bloated or uncomfortable abdomen.

Prevention and Treatment for Constipation

  • Relax:
    • Stress and anxiety can contribute to constipation; consider relaxation techniques or therapy.

  • Constipation lasting more than three weeks.
  • Severe pain or blood in the stool.
  • Unexplained weight loss or fatigue.
