Gastritis / Pain in the abdomen

What is Gastritis?

Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining. Imagine your stomach as a balloon with a protective coating. Gastritis is when this coating gets irritated or damaged.

What Causes Gastritis?

Several things can cause gastritis,

  • Infection: Bacteria, such as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), can infect the stomach lining.
  • Medication: Some pain relievers, especially nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can irritate the stomach.
  • Alcohol and smoking: These can damage the stomach lining.
  • Stress: Can worsen gastritis symptoms.
  • Other medical conditions: Conditions like Crohn's disease or autoimmune disorders can contribute to gastritis.

Symptoms of Gastritis

Not everyone with gastritis has symptoms.

When they do occur, they may include:

  • Upper abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bloating
  • Heartburn

Treatment for Gastritis

Treatment depends on the cause of your gastritis. It may include:

  • Medications: To reduce stomach acid, treat infections, or protect the stomach lining.
  • Lifestyle changes: Avoiding irritants like alcohol, smoking, and spicy foods.
  • Dietary adjustments: Eating smaller, more frequent meals, and avoiding foods that trigger symptoms.
  •

Preventing Gastritis

While you can't always prevent gastritis, you can reduce your risk by:

  • Limiting alcohol and smoking
  • Taking pain relievers cautiously
  • Managing stress
  • Eating a healthy diet

When to See a Doctor

If you experience severe or persistent stomach pain, vomiting blood, or black stools, seek medical attention immediately.

Remember, gastritis is often treatable, and with the right care, you can manage your symptoms effectively.
